FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota man has established a benefit fund for the families of six Missouri men killed in a crash in North Dakota the day after Christmas.

The men were with a construction company and were heading to a work site when their pickup slid off an icy Interstate 94, crossed the median into oncoming traffic and collided with a semitrailer.

Randy Kremer, of Moorhead, Minn., says he set up a fund to help with funeral expenses. He says the bodies of some of the men are being sent back to their home villages in Mexico. He says when he heard the story he felt terrible for the families.

Donations to the Jamestown Accident Victims Funeral Fund can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank branch.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities continue to investigate the cause of a fire that caused the partial evacuation of a Bismarck hotel.

The  fire started in a storage room at the Best Western Ramkota hotel on Saturday evening.

Bismarck Fire Department officials say chairs stored in the room were burning. They say the fire was quickly extinguished, but it took an hour and a half to clear smoke from the rest of the building.

No one was injured in the blaze.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police are investigating a report of an ice fishing house that was stolen from the back of a pickup parked at a downtown shopping mall.

Two counts of Class B felony theft have been filed against Robert Henry Medhus (MAY-hoos) in Cass County District Court.

If convicted, the 65-year-old Medhus could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for each charge.

An investigative report by the state Securities Department alleges that Medhus forged checks made out to the couple and deposited them into his account for his personal use.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A monthly economic index for nine Midwest and Plains states rose again last month but still suggests an economic slump will continue over the next three to six months.

The Mid-America Business Conditions index hit 49.5 in December, up from November’s 48.0 and October’s 46.5.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says he’s expecting only small regional increases in the job market.

The survey of business leaders and supply managers uses a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth while a score below 50 suggests decline for that factor.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota has a new poker champion.

Gregg Dahle (DAW’-lee), of Carpio, outlasted more than 1,400 players from 22 states and Canada at the recent North Dakota Texas Hold ’em tournament in Minot. He won $45,000.

The tournament is held each year at The Vegas Motel in Minot. The Minot State University Alumni Association sponsors the event, and part of the proceeds go toward MSU scholarships.

Dahle was the runner-up two years ago. He’s the first player to return to the final table and claim the crown.

Tom Gullickson, of Hazen, took second place and won $20,000.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota farmers and ranchers say that so far, their winter operations are running smoothly compared with last winter, despite more snow having already fallen.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that December snowfall varied across North Dakota.

The USDA says cattle producers have been benefiting from areas of the state that got less snow. Some parts of the state have enough snow protection for winter crops such as alfalfa and winter wheat.

The  average snow depth in the state was 4.7 inches as of Sunday. Nearly a year ago, the average depth was less than a half-inch.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The oil boom and high agricultural prices have changed North Dakota’s fortunes in the past decade.

But the state’s population increased 6.6 percent between the 2000 census and the estimate for 2011 as people moved to North Dakota for jobs. The state’s per-capita income also jumped from less than $26,000 in 2000 to more than $47,000 in 2011.

Richard Rathge, a demographer at North Dakota State University, says the so-called brain drain the state once suffered from losing its educated young people has been reversed. In 2011, North Dakota’s net migration gain was more than 30,000.

But he says the airport has not seen any delays over an hour since Delta Air Lines and United Airlines added flights late last year.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Fargo Air Museum has added a homebuilt airplane to its permanent collection.

Executive director Fran Brummond says homebuilt aircraft had not been represented at the museum and the four-seat Velocity fills that niche.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama has issued a warning in the wake of the long road taken to avert the so-called fiscal cliff of higher taxes and deep spending cuts. Obama says he will not negotiate with Congress over another increase in the nation’s debt ceiling and that the deficit is still too high.

WASHINGTON (AP) – There’s still going to be a tax hike even though Congress has sent the president legislation to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. The vast majority of workers will pay higher federal taxes in 2013, largely because a temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes expired on New Year’s Day and wasn’t renewed.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) – The Colorado theater shooting case is back in court today. Prosecutors and defense lawyers will meet with the judge, who wants to be sure everything is ready for next week’s crucial preliminary hearing, where prosecutors are expected to outline their case against the defendant, James Holmes. That hearing will determine if there’s enough evidence to try Holmes.

MONROE, Conn. (AP) – There’s an open house today in a Connecticut town where a former middle school building will be used for students who attended Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown. The children have not attended school since a gunman killed 20 students and six adults. Classes start tomorrow.

DUNMORE, Pa. (AP) – Police say a Pennsylvania driver went a long way in the wrong direction on Interstate 81 early New Year’s Day.
