ArdSheltonValley City (CSi WDAY)  –A wanted man was arrested in a Valley City apartment Saturday, June 4, 2016 by the Valley City Police Department.

WDAY reports that a release said that at about 10 a.m., off-duty police Sgt.Dan Anderson saw Shelton Amar Ard, who had a warrant out for his arrest, near the 800 block of Third Street Southeast. Anderson called for backup, and officers set up a perimeter around a nearby apartment, which Ard had by then entered, according to a release.

The release said because officers thought Ard might have been armed, they called for the James River Special Operations Team. Twenty residences were either evacuated or told to find a safe place indoors.

Officers called for Ard to exit the apartment, which smelled of marijuana, through a public address system. He gave himself up without incident.

A search warrant police obtained allowed officers to search the apartment, where they found narcotics paraphernalia, according to the release.

The release did not say what Ard was wanted for, and Valley City Police had no additional information.

It was reported that assisting in the arrest were Stutsman and Barnes County deputies and  officers from the Valley City and Jamestown Police Departments.
