CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — Tension flared anew on the Dakota Access pipeline as protesters tried to push past a long-blocked bridge on a state highway, only to be turned back by a line of law enforcement using water cannon and what appeared to be tear gas.

Sunday’s skirmishes began around 6 p.m. after protesters removed a burned-out truck on what’s known as the Backwater Bridge, not far from the encampment where they’ve been for weeks as they demonstrate against the pipeline. The Morton County Sheriff’s Department estimated 400 protesters sought to cross the bridge on state Highway 1806.

At least one person was arrested.

Protesters said a gym in Cannon Ball was opened to aid demonstrators who were soaked on a night the temperature dipped into the low 20s or were hit with tear gas.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The November election was hard on North Dakota Democrats, including five women who lost their legislative re-election bids.

But a strong showing by Republican women nearly made up for those ladies’ losses.

The results left the Legislature with one less woman than compared to the 2013 session’s record number of 27.

Five new Republican women won races, giving the GOP 16 women for the upcoming session. That’s the most for the party in at least two decades, which is as far back as detailed records go on the legislative branch website.

Renee Stromme is the director of the nonpartisan North Dakota Women’s Network. She says the strong GOP showing gives her optimism for putting more women in political seats because Democrats had been doing most of the work recruiting women.

BEULAH, N.D. (AP) — One of North Dakota’s largest ongoing construction projects is making its host county a harbor of economic stability while much of the state experiences tough economic times.

The Bismarck Tribune reports a $500 million urea fertilizer plant started in 2014 is past the half-way construction mark within the sprawling industrial complex of Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s Dakota Gasification Co. plant northwest of Beulah.

Mercer County is already home to four power plants, two lignite coal mines and the synfuels plant. Sales were up 17 percent in the most recent reporting quarter compared to last year. That same number declined 26 percent statewide.

Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says coal industry counties are usually a beacon of stability over the years as other counties that are dependent on agriculture and oil struggle with declining commodity prices.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot educators and community leaders have ramped up conversations about establishing a post-secondary technical education center.

Discussion arose due to both job demand and seed money from the city’s $74.3 million grant from the National Disaster Resilience Competition. Approximately $1.8 million of those funds could become available to get a training center started.

Some of the fastest growing jobs in the state are in the technical fields. Minot State University president Steve Shirley says Minot is the only one of North Dakota’s four largest cities without such a center.

Minot Mayor Chuck Barney says the city and its consultant, CDM Smith, have reached out to the university, Dakota College and Minot High School to talk about the next step in utilizing the grant to create a technical center.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — A judge has denied a North Dakota sheriff’s request to stop an effort by county commissioners to remove him from office.

South Central Judicial District Judge David Reich ruled Friday on the request by McKenzie County Sheriff Gary Schwartzenberger. The judge found that the legal action Schwartzenberger was using was not the appropriate route.

Reich also ruled that the county commission did not exceed its jurisdiction by arranging for a third-party investigation into the sheriff’s office.

Commissioners want the governor to remove Schwartzenberger from office because of what they say is a workplace culture of bullying and retaliation. They’ve also voted to place Lt. Michael Schmitzon on unpaid administrative leave with the possibility of termination.

Schwartzenberger says he respects the judge’s opinion.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Xavier Rhodes returned one of his two interceptions 100 yards for a touchdown and Cordarrelle Patterson took the second-half kickoff 104 yards for a score in Minnesota’s 30-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday that stopped their four-game losing streak.

The Vikings (6-4) used those momentum-shifting plays they’d been missing to hold onto a first-place tie with Detroit in the NFC North, with a rematch against the Lions looming in four days. After fueling a 5-0 start with four return touchdowns, the Vikings didn’t produce any over their last four games.

Russell Wilson threw for 272 yards and a touchdown, and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Doug Baldwin as the Seattle Seahawks rolled past the Philadelphia Eagles 26-15. Wilson became the first quarterback in Seahawks franchise history to catch a touchdown, a perfect end-around pass to give the Seahawks a 23-7 lead.

The Giants clawed back to beat the Bears 22-16. Eli Manning threw a go-ahead 15-yard touchdown pass to rookie Sterling Shepard in the third quarter as New York won its fifth straight. That streak is New York’s longest since 2010. The loss dropped the Bears to 2-8, their worst start since 2002.

Kirk Cousins passed for 375 yards and three TDs in leading the Washington Redskins past Green Bay 42-24 last night. The Redskins are in the thick of the NFC wild card hunt at 6-3-1 while the Pack lost their fourth in a row to fall to 4-6.

PARIS (AP) — French anti-terrorism police say they’ve broken up a terror attack plot with the arrest of seven people. They say the raids in Strasbourg and Marseille (mahr-SAY’), were linked to a series of arrests in June during the European Championship soccer tournament that was held in cities across France. Investigators didn’t identify the target but are studying whether it was part of a larger plot to attack multiple sites simultaneously.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Officials say at least one small child is among the dead in the suicide bombing of a Shiite mosque in the western part of the Afghan capital, Kabul. Officials say a bomber on foot blew himself up among the crowds inside the mosque, killing at least 28 people and wounding more than 40. No group has claimed responsibility but militant Sunni fundamentalists like the Taliban and the Islamic State group are suspect.

UNDATED (AP) — Authorities in Texas and Missouri say the shootings of police officers in their states were targeted attacks. A Texas detective was killed and a St. Louis officer is expected to survive despite being shot twice in the face. No arrests have been made yet. Two other police officers were also shot last night, but it wasn’t clear whether the incidents were also targeted attacks.

ISTANBUL (AP) — NATO’s general secretary is putting a positive face on the incoming Trump administration in the United States. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (yehnz STOHL’-tehn-burg) says he is “looking forward” to working with Donald Trump’s upcoming U.S. administration and reiterated the trans-Atlantic alliance’s dedication to increasing funds from non-U.S. members. He says Trump assured America’s “strong support for the alliance.”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida says two hurricanes and the Zika scare apparently didn’t faze tourists, who came in record numbers. Florida Gov. Rick Scott will announce today that 85 million tourists visited the state during the first nine months of 2016. State officials say that’s the highest nine-month total ever and a 5.5 percent increase over last year.
