Jamestown (CSi) Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser has clarified the events that took place Tuesday in the search for Sonia Heinle. He told CSiNewsNow.com Tuesday evening that while her car was found submerged in a slough, icy conditions prevented divers from being able to hook up to the car and bring it to the surface, as cold temperatures affected the diving equipment, and the divers. He added that when darkness set in, the recovery of the car was suspended until daylight, Wednesday. He says, until the car is recovered it won’t be known if her body is still in the car. He said it appears she went off the roadway into the the slough when she misjudged a turn off into her driveway during snowy, windy conditions.
Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Salvation Army, Major, Judy Lowder says the Kettle Campaign is dramatically down in donations, and has thus far only raised 25 percent of the Christmas appeal goal. On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, she stressed the need for donations to support the work of the Salvation Army on a year-round basis, along with the need for bell ringers at kettle locations.
She pointed out that the Christmas Campaign funds 40% of the overall operation of the Salvation Army
All the money raised stays in the Jamestown Community and all of Stutsman County and is the only fundraising campaign of the year, and ends of December 24.
She said there’s a growing need for assistance, especially for food assistance.
Statistics show that there is an increase of at least 20 households a month of new people needing food that previously have never come to the Salvation Army for support.
There are between 130 to 150 households a month utilizing food pantry services
The Salvation Army works with the Great Plains Food Bank to get food that is free or low cost. Along with that, community donations help fill the shelves.
Those who get food assistance must fill out an application every 30 days. The size of the household will determine how much food the family will receive. A typical food box includes vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti sauce, pasta, canned meat, crackers, juice and frozen items or refrigerated items such as meat.
Other services provided by the Salvation Army in addition to the food pantry include:
- Rent and utility assistance
- Spiritual counseling
- Vouchers for help through the Salvation Army’s thrift store and the Pathway of Hope program for families with children to help them get to a better place and more stable life.
- All services are on a case-by-case basis, she said.
- Christmas assistance such as the Angel Tree program where tags are placed on a Christmas Tree in the community. People take a tag, purchase items and take them to the Salvation Army for distribution.
The Jamestown Salvation Army continues to appeal to volunteers to ring bells
Other cash donations are also welcome.
More information on the Jamestown Salvation Army or to set up bell ringing opportunities, and how to make cash donations, and to volunteer to call 701-252-0290. The Corps Headquarters in located on First Avenue North in Jamestown. The Thrift Store is currently located on Business Loop West in Jamestown.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Salvation Army Thrift Store needs to find a new location in Jamestown.
On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Major Judy Lowder said, the owner of the building at the present location on Business Loop West in Jamestown has given the Salvation Army a reasonable amount of time to find a new location, at the owner has other plans for the building.
Last winter a heavy snow load collapsed the roof at the center section of the building, but not significantly affecting the Thrift Store.
She said the Salvation Army is looking for a location, to either rent of buy, preferably in a high traffic area.
Anyone with information on a suitable building may call the Jamestown Salvation Army at 701-252-0290.

Jamestown (FUI) – As the holidays approach, a new online video series about Farmers Union Insurance (FUI) illustrates giving isn’t just a season but is business-as-usual for a company that defines itself on being there when called…and whenever possible.
The video series shares six different feel-good stories from a company North Dakotans can feel good about. Each short story spotlights how FUI’s support of communities goes above and beyond.
Jon Kram of Scheels Arena and the Fargo Force, says, “Farmers Union Insurance helped us keep a home for all of the youth and high school hockey in Fargo.” Kram’s story is just one of the countless communities that have been touched by FUI’s ongoing campaign of corporate giving. Morgan Forness, Central Cass Schools superintendent, shares when his district needed a new athletic field, FUI came to the table to help make their dream a reality. Ron Walters of Great Plains Food Bank credits the insurer with helping to raise over 9,000 pounds of food, or 8,900 meals, for North Dakotans in need throughout the state.
Kevin Ressler, chief sales, marketing & brand officer for FUI, says, “If it’s important to the communities and states we serve, it’s important to Farmers Union Insurance.” The insurer’s campaign of community support “really separates us from other insurance companies.”
Ressler adds, “Supporting communities, and giving back, is integral to FUI’s identity and success. Most major brands have moved away from having a presence in rural communities. We’ve actually increased the number of agencies we have in small towns to serve the population that meets our mission of building stronger communities. When a corporation truly cares — and partners with local communities — amazing things can happen.”
From much-needed athletic fields to student-run radio stations, Farmers Union Insurance invests in the communities which it serves — and, in doing so, raises the bar for other corporations operating in North Dakota.
Watch for the video series, produced by North Dakota’s award-winning media production company, The Creative Treatment, online at fumic.com or across FUI’s social media platforms.
(AP) North Dakota’s longest-serving state treasurer says she won’t seek a fifth term in 2020. Kelly Schmidt was first elected in 2004 and won reelection in 2016 with 63% of the vote. The state treasurer is custodian of the state’s funds and sits on several boards, such as the State Historical Board, State Investment Board and State Canvassing Board. The 57-year-old Schmidt says it’s just time for a new chapter in her life. State lawmakers in recent years have attempted to eliminate the treasurer’s office and transfer its functions to other state agencies.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — The final medical marijuana dispensary is set to open this week in North Dakota. The eighth dispensary is expected to open in Dickinson on Friday. Division of Medical Marijuana director Jason Wahl says medical marijuana program has issued more than 1,850 identification cards to qualifying patients. Wahl says North Dakota is the first state in the nation to add an electronic option for patients, caregivers and agents of dispensaries and manufacturing facilities. Other dispensaries are located in Bismarck, Devils Lake, Fargo, Jamestown, Grand Forks, Minot and Williston.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An anti-abortion group has filed a brief in defense of a North Dakota law that requires doctors to inform women that they can reverse the procedure when it is carried out with medication, even though the science behind that claim is disputed. Heartbeat International Inc., and their attorneys from Alliance Defending Freedom, filed the brief in federal court on Tuesday. The group says the hormone progesterone may stop an abortion after a woman has taken the first of two medications needed to complete the abortion. Abortion rights proponents dispute that claim.

Bulls’ Porter to miss another month with broken foot
Chicago Bulls forward Otto Porter Jr. will miss at least another month because of a broken left foot that was initially diagnosed as a bruise.
The Bulls said the injury was confirmed by Dr. Bob Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist who examined him Monday. The team said the small fracture became clear after repeated imaging over the past five weeks, and Porter will be re-evaluated in four weeks.
Averaging 11.2 points in nine games, he has been sidelined since he was hurt against Atlanta on Nov. 6.

NFL-PATRIOTS-SPYING
Belichick says he was unaware of filming at Bengals’game
UNDATED (AP) — New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says neither he nor his coaching staff has watched any video footage shot by an in-house production team now at the center of an NFL investigation.
The team acknowledges it should not have been filming the Cincinnati Bengals’ sideline at a recent game. Belichick says he was not involved and was unaware of what happened during the Bengals’ game last weekend in Cleveland. Belichick says he was informed the following day.
The Patriots say a crew producing a web series inappropriately filmed the field as part of a feature on the scouting department.

— The Arizona Cardinals have placed defensive lineman Rodney Gunter on injured reserve because of a toe injury suffered in the team’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Gunter has played in all 13 games for the Cardinals this season, making 31 tackles and three sacks.
— Le’Veon Bell will be spared from team discipline after his weekend bowling outing. The New York Jets running back missed the team’s game Sunday against Miami while continuing to recover from the flu, which kept him out of practice for two days last week. Coach Adam Gase said Bell wanted to play but team doctors determined Bell was still ill Saturday.
— Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning may have started his final game for the New York Giants. Giants coach Pat Shurmur says Daniel Jones will return as the starting quarterback once his sprained right ankle heals.
— The Detroit Lions have put wide receiver Marvin Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The Lions also signed defensive tackle Frank Herron to their active roster from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad. Detroit has lost six straight games and nine of its past 10.
MLB..
UNDATED (AP) — The Minnesota Twins finalized a $20 million, two-year contract with suspended pitcher Michael Pineda and a $4.25 million, one-year deal with catcher Alex Avila. Pineda went 11-5 with a 4.01 ERA in 146 innings over 26 starts for the Twins in 2019. He was suspended for 60 games by Major League Baseball on Sept. 7 following a positive test for the banned diurectic hydrochlorothiazide.
(AP) Gerrit Cole quickly ended Stephen Strasburg’s tenure as baseball’s highest-paid pitcher. Cole has agreed to a $324 million, nine-year contract with the New York Yankees, according to a person familiar with the agreement.
Cole’s deal establishes marks for pitchers in total dollars. It tops the $245 million, seven-year contract Stephen Strasburg finalized a day earlier to remain with the World Series champion Washington Nationals.
Its $36 million average is a record for any player and beats the $35.5 million in outfielder Mike Trout’s $426.5 million, 12-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels that started last season. Agent Scott Boras negotiated the deals for Cole and Strasburg.
Astros manager AJ Hinch says he is eager to tell his side of the story regarding allegations Houston used electronics to steal signs in 2017, but he is going to let Major League Baseball talk first. He declined to comment on MLB’s investigation when probed by dozens of reporters at the winter meetings. He says he was instructed not to discuss the matter until its resolved. Hinch says he has been in regular contact with MLB while it investigates. Former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers told The Athletic last month that Houston used outfield cameras to steal signs and banged on a garbage can to convey info to hitters.
In other MLB news:
— Shortstop Didi Gregorius is reuniting with manager Joe Girardi in Philadelphia. He has agreed with the Phillies on a $14 million, one-year contract. Gregorius spent the last five years with the New York Yankees, the first three playing for Girardi. Gregorius missed the early part of last season after Tommy John surgery to repair an elbow ligament.
— Right-hander Junior Guerra and the Arizona Diamondbacks have finalized a one-year contract that guarantees $2.65 million. Guerra turns 35 in January. Guerra was 9-5 with a 3.55 ERA in 71 relief appearances last season. He stuck out 77 and walking 36 in 83 2/3 innings.
— The San Francisco Giants have bolstered their infield by acquiring Zack Cozart and prospect Will Wilson from the Los Angeles Angels for a player to be named or cash. Cozart missed significant time in 2019 with shoulder and neck injuries. If healthy, the 2017 All-Star could play second base or provide versatility behind third baseman Evan Longoria.
—The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks will play each other in April in Major League Baseball’s first regular-season games in Mexico City. The commissioner’s office said Tuesday the two games on April 18 and 19 will be at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium, a 20,000-capacity ballpark that opened last year.
— Nike’s logo will be on the upper right chest of Major League Baseball jerseys this year, a far a more prominent position than the Majestic Athletic logo previously on sleeves. A 10-year agreement announced last January replaced a deal announced in December 2016 for Under Armour to take over from Majestic.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Jersey City’s mayor says authorities believe a Jewish kosher market was targeted in a New Jersey gunbattle that killed six people. The furious shooting filled the streets of Jersey City with the sound of heavy gunfire for hours Tuesday. Authorities say the dead are a police officer, three bystanders and two suspects. Police Chief Michael Kelly is not saying exactly what set off the shooting just across the Hudson River from New York City. He says the officer who died was trying to stop some “bad guys” near a cemetery. The gunmen then drove a stolen rental van to another part of the city and engaged police in a lengthy shootout from inside a kosher supermarket. Fulop did not elaborate on why authorities believe the market was targeted.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve is set to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged Wednesday and will likely signal that it expects rates to remain low well into next year despite a robust job market. That suggests that even if growth remains steady and hiring continues at a solid pace, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and other Fed officials are prepared to hold off on a rate hike, unless inflation were to rise rapidly. Many economists, though, have said they think sluggish growth will compel the Fed to cut rates at least once in 2020.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey’s foreign minister has suggested that his country could bar American troops from using two strategically-placed Turkish air bases in retaliation to possible sanctions by Washington against his country. The minister made the comment Wednesday amid reports that U.S. lawmakers had agreed on a defense bill that also calls for sanctions on Turkey over its decision to proceed with the deployment of Russian-made missile defense systems. The state-run Turkish news agency Anadolu quoted the Turkish foreign minister as hinting that the use of two Turkish air bases could be put at risk. Turkey’s purchase of Russian technology has added to tensions between the NATO allies.
MADRID (AP) — Activist Greta Thunberg says business and political leaders are misleading the public by holding climate talks that are not achieving real action against what she called the world’s “climate emergency.” In a fact-filled speech, Thunberg told negotiators that the U.N. climate talks in Madrid had turned into just another chance for countries to negotiate loopholes and avoid being ambitious in fighting climate change. In Brussels, meanwhile, the European Union is set to announce an ambitious plan on cutting the greenhouse gas emissions. That move could put pressure on other countries to at the U.N. climate conference to step up the fight against climate change.
WHAKATANE, New Zealand (AP) — A New Zealand volcano is venting more steam and mud after a deadly eruption two days ago. Scientists say volcanic tremors are rising, too, and another eruption at White Island is possible in the next 24 hours. Six people were confirmed dead in Monday’s eruption, but the increased volcanic activity is delaying the retrieval of eight other bodies believed to remain on the island. Many of the 30 people still hospitalized have critical burns. Australia’s government plans to bring some patients to Australian hospitals for continuing treatment.
