This Day In History, March 9, 1883 – North Dakota State Hospital ordered constructed. . . . . from the 125th Anniversary Calendar of Jamestown History & Asylum projects.org .
The North Dakota State Hospital at Jamestown is one of two state institutions that predate statehood. Its location and mission as a “hospital for the insane” was authorized by the Dakota Territorial Legislature in 1883 and it opened on May 1, 1885, accepting its first two patients from Morton County. Fifty-eight patients whose addresses were in what eventually became North Dakota were moved to Jamestown from the Dakota Hospital in Yankton (now South Dakota). The first superintendent was Dr. O. Wellington Archibald, who had been an assistant surgeon at Fort Abraham Lincoln south of Mandan. By the end of 1886, the average daily census was 106 patients
(CSi) Middle school students in the area will come together at the University of Jamestown, on March 9, for the annual TechSavvy & STEMtastic event.
More than 500 students will participate in a fun, daylong event to explore different careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEM professionals will be leading hands-on and interactive workshops over the day, which students sign up for ahead of time.
“The events would not be possible without the tremendous support of local, state and regional companies sending their STEM professionals to lead hands-on workshops,” stated Co-chair Erica Althoff, Engineer with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in North Dakota. “Students who have participated in the event have enjoyed it.”
Schools scheduled to participate this year include Jamestown Middle School, Medina, Pingree-Buchanan, Montpelier, Litchville-Marion, Gackle-Streeter, Hillcrest Academy, Barnes County North, and Edgeley. These 7th and 8th graders will participate in the one-of-a-kind experience at no cost.
Presenters from across the state will put on different workshops that will include dentistry, chemistry, pharmacy, engineering, wildlife biology, drones, graphic design, transportation and more.
“Through hands-on workshops, exposure to STEM professionals and role models, and a conversation on engineering problem solving principles followed by small group activity to put their knowledge into practices, students are encouraged to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists. The atmosphere of a college campus helps them envision their future accomplishments,” Althoff stated.
The morning will begin with a welcome from University of Jamestown President Dr. Polly Peterson, followed by a keynote speaker from NASA.
The event is sponsored by AAUW Jamestown with numerous sponsors including the Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, Interstate Engineering, Jamestown School District 1, University of Jamestown, and the ND Stem Network.

Jamestown (Chamber) Members of the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Committee and the Young Professionals of Jamestown presented the Customer Service Award for March to Jordan Schock of Wilhelm’s Service Center for his outstanding customer service.
The nomination letter stated:
“On Friday, January 3, I had a routine oil change and had ordered new tires. Previous to this appointment, Jordan ensured the tires that were ordered with quality yet affordable and made sure that the appointment could include both services in a timely manner. During the appointment, Jordan came into the waiting room to let me know a sensor had been broken during the process, but that they would cover it and get it from across town from another dealer. He apologized and continued to come back to the waiting room to update me on how much longer. He is professional, communicated well with me, was mindful of my time, and provided excellent customer service. Even on a Friday evening when most people would have been anxious to get done with the work day, Jordan was focused on providing quality customer service.”
The chamber honors individuals who demonstrate a consistent commitment to delivering products or services that satisfy customers by exceeding their requirements or expectations.
Congratulations to Jordan, who along with all the other monthly winners, will be recognized at the Chamber’s annual banquet in January 2021. Customer Service Award nomination forms are available at the Chamber office and on their website at www.jamestownchamber.com or call 701-252-4830.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Some Native Americans in Fargo, North Dakota, are hoping to find a new location for a communal sweat lodge because city leaders shuttered the one that tribal members had been using for a decade. The city closed the sweat lodge in December over concerns about the safety and supervision of the purification ceremonies being performed there. Native Americans agree that changes were needed, but they’re worried about how and when they’ll be able to take part in the sacred rituals again. The nearest lodge is hundreds of miles away on a reservation.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Tyrell Hatton overcame high winds and jittery nerves to capture his first PGA title and fifth worldwide.
Hatton kept it together down the stretch Sunday by playing bogey-free over the last seven holes for a 2-over 74 to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He had a three-shot lead when he drove into the water on the par-4 11th into the wind. Hatton went well over the green with his third shot, chipped short of the putting surface and had to make a 6-footer for a double bogey.
But his challengers also faltered. Marc Leishman (LEESH’-man) avoided major disaster and still closed with a 73 to end up one shot behind Hatton. Rory McIlroy began the day one shot back before carding a 76, his highest closing round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since a 76 in the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion. McIlroy still tied for fifth, his eighth consecutive finish in the top 5 worldwide dating to September.
Third-place finisher Sungjae Im was in serious contention until he came up shockingly short and into the water on the 13th for a double bogey.
Hatton’s 4-under total made him one of only four players who beat par for the week, the fewest at Bay Hill since 1980.

ROME (AP) — World oil demand is expected to fall this year for the first time since the global financial crisis in 2009. The International Energy Agency cut its forecast for global oil demand by 1.1 million barrels a day as the new coronavirus wreaks havoc on the global economy. That will leave demand 90,000 barrels a day below the previous year. The agency advises mainly oil-importing countries on energy matters. It said Monday that it expects demand to return close to normal in the second half of this year. But it also says much depends on how governments react to halt the spread of the virus.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia has closed off its air and sea travel to nine countries affected by the new coronavirus. Neighboring Qatar has halted travel to 15 nations. The moves came as Mideast stock markets tumbled Monday over fears about the widening outbreak’s effect on the global economy. The state oil giant Saudi Aramco led the financial losses, dropping by 10% on Riyadh’s Tadawul stock exchange. That forced a halt to Aramco’s trading. Other Mideast markets fell as well. The new coronavirus has affected global energy prices, and OPEC failed to make a production cut deal with Russia last week. Global oil prices have suffered their worst losses since the start of the 1991 Gulf War.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom and the mayor of Oakland are seeking to reassure the public that none of the passengers from a ship with at least 21 cases of the new coronavirus will be released into the public before undergoing a 14-day quarantine. The Grand Princess carrying more than 3,500 people from 54 countries is expected to dock in Oakland, in the east San Francisco Bay, on Monday. The governor says those who need acute medical care or hospitalization will come off first in a process that could take up to three days. Meanwhile, the U.S. death toll from the virus hit 21 on Sunday. As testing increased, the number of infections in the United States climbed above 500.
BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets have plunged after global oil prices nosedived on fears the global economy weakened by a virus outbreak might be awash in too much crude. Tokyo’s benchmark tumbled 6.2%, while Sydney fell 6.1%. Seoul sank 4.4% and Hong Kong lost 3.9%. Shares also sank in Middle East trading on Sunday. The drop was triggered by a 25% fall in oil prices due to conflict between Saudi Arabia, Russia and other oil producers over how much to cut output to prop up prices. Markets already have been shaken by the potential impact of the virus outbreak that began in China and has disrupted travel and trade.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden worshiped at a predominantly African American church in Mississippi, two days before the state’s primary. It’s a state where black voters will play a pivotal role. Rival Bernie Sanders is campaigning in Michigan, the biggest prize among the six states voting Tuesday. A Mississippi congressman who introduced Biden to the congregation called Biden “the comeback kid.” Biden struggled in the early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada but won decisively in South Carolina, boosted by African American voters. He also had a strong showing on Super Tuesday. Sanders, attempting to bolster his own appeal with African Americans, announced the endorsement of the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two members of Congress, Sen. Ted Cruz and congressman Paul Gosar, say they are isolating themselves after determining they had contact at a political conference with a man who has tested positive for coronavirus. Cruz says he had brief contact with the man at the Conservative Political Action Conference nearly two weeks ago and would spend the next few days at his home in Texas until a full 14 days had passed since their interaction. Gosar says he had sustained contact with the man at CPAC and that he and three members of his senior staff are under self-quarantine. The office of the Arizona Republican will be closed for the week.
