Jamestown (Chamber) The chamber Young Professionals of Jamestown and the Chamber Ambassadors recently recognized Bison 6 Cinema as the December Business of the Month Award recipient for their outstanding customer service and continued commitment to the community.
Their nomination stated, ” I took my 6-yr old to a special mom/daughter movie day. Of course, we had the discussion about what she brings to the theater, she carries. The staff at the concessions were so sweet and patient with us as we decided on our treats. As we finished paying, she asked me to hold “all her things” and her treat tray. While trying to help her juggle her treats I spilled half my bag of popcorn on the floor. While apologizing profusely, the manager just said no problem and refilled my bag. The gals on staff sweetly smiled and said it happened all the time and they came to my rescue. For that moment of kindness, they all deserve to be part of today’s Business of the month nomination. Because of their kindness, I was able to get her to the movie for our special date. Thank you to all the staff at Bison 6.”
The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce honors businesses that provide superior customer service, exhibit community spirit and provide a positive economic impact to the community. This award provides recognition throughout the month with a plaque and a recognition banner for the month. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — An attorney for the Minnesota police officer who killed Black motorist Daunte Wright has told jurors that all Wright had to do that day was surrender to police. Prosecutors told jurors earlier Wednesday that former Brooklyn Center Officer Kim Potter violated her training and “betrayed a 20-year-old kid.” Defense attorney Paul Engh, meanwhile, told jurors during his opening statement that Potter made a mistake when she pulled her handgun instead of her Taser but that she ‘’did what she had to do” to protect a fellow officer. The prosecution says the former suburban Minneapolis officer had undergone extensive training that warned about such a mix-up. Potter has told the court she will testify at the trial.

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization says early evidence suggests the omicron variant of the coronavirus may be spreading faster than the highly transmissible delta variant and brings with it less severe disease — although it’s too early to make firm conclusions. The comments come among swirling concerns about the new variant that first emerged in southern Africa last month. Some countries have shut their borders and the existence of omicron has rattled stock markets fearful of the long-term impact of a possible new variant. So far, coronavirus has infected at least 267 million people and killed more than 5.2 million.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — After deliberating for five hours over two days, jurors have recommended the death penalty for a man convicted of killing an Orlando police lieutenant four years ago. The 12-member jury in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday agreed with prosecutors that Markeith Loyd should face capital punishment for the 2017 shooting death of Lt. Debra Clayton. She was killed as she tried to arrest him outside a Walmart store for the fatal shooting of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Loyd has already been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and her unborn child. The jury in that case recommended that he be sentenced to life in prison.
CHICAGO (AP) — Jussie Smollett’s defense attorney says charges against the former “Empire” actor rely on the testimony of brothers who are “sophisticated liars” and “the worst type of criminals.” Neny Uche said during his closing argument Wednesday that prosecutors’ case against Smollett is “built like a house of cards.” Smollett is charged with staging a racist, anti-gay attack against himself in January 2019 and lying to Chicago police about it. Prosecutor Dan Webb told jurors that there’s “overwhelming” evidence against Smollett. The jury is to begin deliberating later Wednesday. On the stand, Smollett has repeatedly denied the attack was a fake, telling a prosecutor “there was no hoax on my part” and that two brothers who testified against him are “liars.”
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida judge declared a mistrial in a murder case after jurors failed to agree on a verdict following more than five days of deliberations. The jury had delivered a manslaughter verdict against 27-year-old Dayonte Resiles on Tuesday evening. But the decision was rescinded moments later when a juror said she didn’t agree. The judge sent jurors back Tuesday night and Wednesday to try to reach a decision, but they said they remained deadlocked. Resiles is accused of killing Jill Halliburton Su. She was bound, forced into a bathtub and stabbed about 25 times during a burglary in 2014.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — A federal jury in Arkansas has begun deliberations in the trial of former reality TV star Josh Duggar, who is accused of receiving and possessing child pornography. The jury began its deliberations at midday Wednesday, a week after the trial began in northwest Arkansas. Duggar faces up to 20 years in prison on each count if convicted. He was featured on TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting,” which was pulled in 2015 over revelations that Duggar had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter. Duggar was charged in April after child pornography was discovered on a computer at his workplace.
